The Dynamic Earth
Geology 101
The Dynamic Earth is a survey course in physical geology. We will try to understand how the Earth works today. We will investigate the dynamics of the Earth, such as volcanoes and earthquakes, as evidence for the way the Earth works. Our primary viewpoint is the Earth as it is today; we won't consider in any detail the history of the Earth except as needed to understand its present state. Our goal is the theory of plate tectonics, our theory for the way the Earth works.
We know the Earth is a special place—we're on it, and we're observing it! But what is it that makes it special? I think we'll see that the Earth has just the right size, just the right distance from the Sun, and just the right state of H2O for all the features we see on Earth, including life itself.
In trying to understand Earth, we will come face-to-face with science and the scientific method. We will explore many theories, how they were proposed, and how they were modified as more geologic information became available.
In the end, I hope you will come to appreciate the interconnections of Earth processes, to learn about our local geologic environment, and to discover the meaning and place of science, especially Earth science, in our complex society.
